Garibay’s artwork portrays the determination and hustle culture in the Philippines, especially the masa. Through social realism. It displays weariness that indicates the reality of many Filipinos, such as Filipinos carrying heavy rice sacks, as well as the bustling roads that are filled with stalls/street vendors. The overflowing and catastrophic style of Garibay reflects the heavy burdens that the working class has to face in the Philippines and the bustling noise in urban areas. It serves as a gentle reminder for us to critique those in power for the neglect and economic disparity faced by the nation. Amidst the high pressure of urban poverty, the painting reflects the Filipino community or “Bayanihan” because Garibay challenges the viewers to see beyond everyday hustle and survival as we acknowledge the dignity, labour, and realities of the working class.

Ravaged Manila

The artwork "Ravaged Manila" is an oil canvas painting by Dominador Castaneda, portraying the grim aftermath of the Battle of Manila during the World War II in 1945. We see bodies lying lifeless on the ground, even children and the elderly, along with the survivors walking in grief and defeat. The survivors are seen carrying bags and carts with them, implying that they've been displaced due to the destruction of their homes and are now looking for a new home. This painting conveys the emotion of sadness, grief, and defeat as the people lose their lives, both literally and figuratively, and the historical struggle seen here is the destruction and the lives that were lost in the Battle of Manila, and how the Filipinos struggled to live with the aftermath and the rebuilding of a new life outside of the homes they were once used to, and it shows the pain of losing your loved one to war, and the hardship of moving forward.
