Bio-Inspired Design & Ecological Feasibility
The cloud rat display helped me realize the importance of biodiversity and preserving it. In my barangay, tree roots are often cut down due to the cracks they form on concrete roads and sidewalks, and I therefore propose a solution wherein the damaged concrete is removed instead, and replaced with flexible and permeable rubber paving or gravel grids around the base of the tree, which will allow the roots to absorb rainwater and expand without disrupting the pavement, and shows that it does not need to be cut down. In order to promote biodiversity, I urge my community to replace non-native garden flowers with Philippine native flowering plants such as the melendres, salingbobog, and tayabak, because these plants have the exact nectar and pollen that local insects need to feed. These solutions show how deforestation not only affects trees, but the animals that rely on these trees to live.
Material Science & Preservation Logic
The lungon was made from molave, ipil, dungon, and the white lauan. These specific hardwoods were chosen due to their high resin and oil content which acted as a natural preservative, and is why the vessel outlasted its contents. These materials and preservation methods can be used in the aforementioned proposal as a source of inspiration. The eco-solution includes the use of wood-based or bio-based flexible materials in the rubber paving and gravel grids that are durable enough for outdoor use while allowing some movement as the roots grow. The fact that the lungon coffin has lasted centuries means that our ancestors expertly executed proper preservation, and this means that it is better for us to use the natural properties of materials to create durable solutions that work with the environment, rather than relying on manmade, artificial materials.
Socio-Technological Critique & Innovation Context
"Ravaged in Manila" depicts the tragic effects of war, nuclear bombing, and the irresponsible used of technological advancement and shows that these harm not only the innocent citizens, but their homes, the environment, and the many animals that most likely have been gravely affected. In modern Philippine technology, in the age where AI and technology are rampant, it is important that we think about the fact that we are not the only ones living on this planet. We are coexisting with a vast number of species. Eco-innovation is crucial because as we progress in terms of technology and innovation, we must also be sure to remember and find a way to integrate the environment. We must always remember the quote "Think global, act local". Technological advancement should not come at the expense of the environment.
